CME’s ESSH Safety Training A Big Hit

CME’s ESSH Safety Training A Big Hit

The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) offer training that is proving quite popular and useful to BC manufacturers and food processers.

The CME’s Essential Skills through Safety and Health (ESSH) program is funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada: The Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (HRSDC – OLES).

The program offers videos that use very simple imagery to help workers, who don’t have English or French as a first language, to gain a working knowledge of the languages that will allow them to function safely in the workplace.

According to some in the manufacturing and food processing industries, the CME’s ESL training fills a void in the education of workers who may be hired on a short-term basis for periods that make it difficult or impossible to learn the necessary English language skills as well as for longer term employees who may have immigrated with few English or French language skills.

The curriculum that was developed, entitled Learning a Culture of Safety, has been greeted with almost universal praise and an overwhelmingly positive response.
