The FIOSA - MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC staff is made up of highly motivated safety professionals supported by team members with occupational health and safety experience. The team is dedicated to working with industry to reduce the injury rate.

 

Lisa McGuire CRSP

Lisa is the Chief Execuitve Officer of the FIOSA-MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC, formerly known as FIOSA, that was established in 2007. She is one of the founders of the BC Food Processors Association that was originally comprised of Safety & Human Resource professionals. Lisa has served as a Director on the BCFPA Board of Directors and is Chair of the BCFPA Safety Committee. The accomplishments achieved by the committee include designing an industry return to work form, producing an award winning training DVD and obtaining industry support to establish a Safety Council for the Food Processing Industry. Lisa is a member of the Agri-Future Funds Adjudication Committee and Certifying Partners Advisory Committee.

Lisa’s educational background includes a diverse Agricultural Science education through the University of Saskatchewan and University of British Columbia. She achieved her Occupational Health & Safety certification “with honors” through the BC Institute of Technology and received her external safety auditor’s certification through Alberta Association for Safety Partnerships. Lisa obtained her professional safety designation (CRSP) through the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals in 2004. Lisa served 10 years in the poultry industry with the latter 6 years as the Safety Coordinator of a turkey processing facility.

 

 

Heinrich Beukes CRSP

Heinrich was born and raised in South Africa. He obtained a National Diploma in Public Health in 1992 and a Bachelors degree in Environmental Health from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 1995.

He worked for one of the largest transportation companies in the world – Transnet Ltd. as a Risk Professional. He immigrated to Canada in 2001 and worked as a Regional Safety Consultant for the Ontario Safety Association for Community and Healthcare until 2006. He then accepted the position of Health and Safety Manager at the Molson Vancouver Brewery.

Heinrich has more than 15 years of experience in Safety Management, Occupational Hygiene and Environmental Management. He specializes in program auditing and safety management system development as well as program implementation. He has several national and international accreditations and holds a CRSP designation and is a CSSE member. He has written several published technical Health and Safety articles for the Healthcare Industry and worked on various provincial initiatives with the WSIB and the Ministry of Labour in Ontario.

Aron Laxton, CRSP

Aron is an accomplished Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) Practitioner with extensive experience in conducting Health & Safety Assurance programs and employee training. Aron has been working in the HS&E since 2001 and has been involved with the COR program since 2008.  He is well versed in providing information and advice at all organizational levels.

Aron is a graduate of the BC Institute of Technology Occupational Health & Safety certificate program, and has recently achieved his ISO 9000 Lead Auditor certification. Aron is also a licensed paramedic having completed his certification through the Justice Institute of BC.

 

 

Roline Beukes

Roline is the Administrator for the Occupational Safety Standard of Excellence (referred to as OSSE) for the FIOSA-MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC.

Roline received a National Certificate in Office Administration from Cape Town Technical College in 1988. She has since completed various work and other technical related training courses.

Roline has 15 years of work experience and background knowledge in a myriad of industries. Her work experience includes technical database management for an international telecommunications company (Telkom) in South Africa. She was also involved in coordinating network maintenance activities and planning coordination for future networks development. Roline recently managed workflow and office administration activities for two Vancouver based construction companies. Roline has served as a health & safety representative and is a strong advocate for health & safety.

Roline has recently completed an Events Planning course which has allowed her to take on the responsibility for FIOSA-MIOSA for all conferences and event planning.

 

 

Terry Thomas, CRSP

A BC native, Terry has been involved in the occupational health and safety field for more than 20 years.

His safety career began with the CN Rail Safety and Loss Control Department in 1987, based in Edmonton and Winnipeg.

In 1991 he returned to the Lower Mainland, accepting a position as Health & Safety Coordinator with the District of Matsqui and transferring over to the City of Abbotsford after amalgamation in 1995.

The period between 2000 and 2005 was spent working in the heavy construction industry primarily as a health and safety adviser.

In 2005 Terry became the BC Region Health and Safety Coordinator for Golder Associates Ltd an international consulting engineering firm.

He obtained a Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety from the University of Alberta through the Extension Division in 1990 and has continued to expand his knowledge of occupational health and safety through distance learning.

Lorne Gosick, CRSP

Lorne brings 24 years of experience from the forestry sector (11 years in harvesting and 13 years in manufacturing) to his role as safety adviser.

During his employment with Slocan and Canfor Lorne led many audits on production facilities throughout BC; facilitated WorkSafeBC courses; developed courses on ergonomics, mobile equipment and due diligence; and presented courses on behaviour based safety and hazard recognition.

Lorne understands the constraints and limitations that employers have placed on them from 6 years of experience managing small and medium sized department stores.  He also understands how companies will benefit in terms of increased production and quality when a safety management system is instituted and is keen to pass on this knowledge to other organizations.

Lorne completed his Occupational Health & Safety certificate from BCIT in 2007and achieved his professional designation as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) in 2008.


All these experiences will assist Lorne as he manages the small employer programs and focuses on the small employer clients of FIOSA.

Andrew McKenzie, CRSP

Andrew has been in occupational health and safety for more than 12 years, working in the Lower Mainland and operations across Canada and the US.

His career in safety has seen him working a variety of different industries including occupational hygiene, construction (residential to heavy industrial), facility management safety, claims management, manufacturing, and most recently as a Refit Safety Coordinator for BC Ferries at their ship maintenance yard in Richmond.

Andrew graduated from the Occupational Health and Safety Diploma Program at BCIT in 1998 and obtained a CRSP designation in 2005, and has been a member of the Lower Mainland Chapter of the CSSE since 1996.

“Wayne has taught in professional, corporate and academic training industries for more than 15 years.
He has educated students at all age levels and experience levels in Canada as well as internationally In the
USA, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

Wayne studied at BCIT and earned a TESL certificate from Winfield College in Vancouver BC.

His educational career has helped him understand the delicacies needed to effectively deliver
training in both a one on one and in a classroom environment. He also understands intricacies of  
how companies benefit from training and has consulted on many large projects. He has trained
students from the beginner level through to certification.

 

 

Jane Eckersley

Jane is the Communications Coordinator for the FIOSA - MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC.

Jane has a background in food processing having obtained a degree in food technology while working in the food industry in England. Jane then moved into logistics, specializing in food supply and distribution for the British Army.

After working for the Army, Jane went back to school to study business administration and accounts; transferable skills which enabled her to find work as she moved around the world as a military spouse.

Jane is now happily settled in Chilliwack and is enjoying using the knowledge gained during her diverse career to contribute to the growth and success of the FIOSA - MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC.

 

 

Aldo Garza

Passionate about art and graphic design, Aldo is the talented in-house artist who is responsible of the creation of brands, graphic design of marketing and communications materials and website for FIOSA - MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC, since it started operations in 2008, as the BC Food Processors Health and Safety Council.

Aldo graduated in 1994 from Instituto de Comunicacion Grafica del Norte, in Visual Arts and Marketing in Saltillo, Mexico. He then worked as freelance in the marketing and media industries before heading up a design team Communication Department of the Government of the State of Coahuila. Here he was responsible for the development of printed and digital media, from newspaper advertisements to story boards for TV commercials.  He also worked on the design for several national and international events beginning with the creation of the brand to the design of the marketing applications to support the original concept.

Mike Archer

Mike Archer is the newest member of our team. He brings more than 20 years experience in writing, editing and strategic communications experience to his new role.

Archer spent 20 years in the newspaper business as a journalist, editor, sales manager and publisher before moving into public relations and business consulting. In 2008 he became founding editor of the Abbotsford Post and he is co-owner of Today Media Group, a company that specializes in community websites.

Archer graduated from the University of Alberta in 1970 with a BA in Political Science and Economics and has since pursued graduate studies in both Federalism and Journalism. He has a Diploma in Web Design from Academy of Learning.

“I look forward to getting the message out, on behalf of FIOSA-MIOSA and our clients, that a safer, healthier workplace is a crucial way to achieve corporate success in BC,” he says.

Archer will be working with FIOSA-MIOSA staff on corporate communications including media relations, our quarterly newsletter, press releases and the website and social media platforms.
