Board of Directors

The FIOSA - MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC is governed by a 14-member Board of Directors representing the spectrum of the food processing and manufacturing industries. There is currently one vacancy due to the resignation of a director who moved to another postion outside BC. Many of the Directors have been involved with the FIOSA - MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC since its inception. The Directors are committed to the mandate of reducing workplace injuries in the industry. The Board oversees a Chief Executive Officer who is responsible for managing the FIOSA - MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC on a day to day basis.

Daneen Skilling
Chair

 

Daneen has been involved in the field of occupational health and safety for ten years.  She is currently the National Safety Manager for Andrew Peller Ltd in Kelowna.  Daneen graduated from the University of Guelph with a B.Sc in microbiology.  She gained her certification in health and safety from the University of Alberta.

 

Carol Wagner, CHRP
Vice Chair

 

Carol Wagner, CHRP, is the Human Resources Manager for a third party logistics company. She is responsible for a wide variety of Human Resources functions, including recruitment and selection, orientation, training/development, and employee relations. Carol has been in Human Resources field since 1992.

Carol has her Human Resources Management Certificate from BCIT, has she has obtained her Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation.  She is an active Human Resources Management Association (HRMA) member, and is involved in its mentoring program. Carol is also a strong supporter of the United Way, and was a United Way Impact Committee Member for many years. Carol enjoys working with youth, and she participates often in the Junior Achievement “Economics of Staying in School” program. Carol has also volunteered as a board member of the Focus on Disability Network Society.

 

Debbie South-Mitchell, CHRP
Secretary

 

Debbie has been a Human Resource professional for over 25 years in both British Columbia and Ontario. Early in her career, Debbie realized the value for companies to develop comprehensive safety programs, and has been instrumental in ensuring safety comes first in the companies she’s been associated with. She believes employees want to work for companies that truly care about their personal safety, and as a bonus, companies realize a positive financial impact when employing a comprehensive safety program.

Debbie’s experience in British Columbia has been in food manufacturing and in Ontario she and her husband owned and operated a large franchised grocery store. The transition to a manufacturing environment was fairly easy as both environments are very fast paced and customer focused. Debbie obtained her CHRP in 2007, and ensures her HR knowledge is current by attending seminars, webinars and using various types of media for enrichment. She has participated in the BC HRMA mentorship program, and is excited to be an active volunteer with the developing Canuck Place facility in her hometown of Abbotsford.

 

Dan Reader, CA
Director

 

Dan has worked for Murray Latta Progressive Machine Inc. for 25 years and has been the President since 1996.  Murray Latta, which has been in business for over 90 years, is a local custom manufacturer of industrial equipment offering custom machinery design & manufacturing, distribution and field millwright services.

Dan also presently sits on the Board for the BC division of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) as well as the Western Employer Labour Relations Association.  Previous volunteer Board positions included The People’s Law School, as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley.

Kris Fraser has recently taken on the role of Vice President Manufacturing at Epic Polymer, a Design-Manufacturer of custom industrial plastics, specializing in the formulation, molding and machining of precision mechanical plastic parts.  

Kris is also an active member of the CME Executive Council which brings members together on a monthly basis to exchange information, ideas and insights.

 

Derrick Wiens CRSP
Director

 

Derrick has 21 years of experience in the Food Processing Industry with the last 8 years as the Safety/Claims Coordinator for Lilydale Inc. In Abbotsford, BC. Derrick is responsible for all aspects of the development and implementation of the safety program as well as employee/management training and development. Derrick graduated with honours from the BCIT, Occupational Health and Safety Certificate Program. Derrick is a Certified Internal Auditor (Alberta Association of Safety Partnerships) and a Certified Master Instructor (Ives) of mobile equipment.

 

Paul Barton
Director

 

Paul is a Business Agent with Teamsters Local 464.  In this capacity since 2002, Paul currently represents approximately 1,700 workers in bread/roll bakeries, dessert bakeries, soy production and the dairy industry.

Paul has worked in the Food Industry for close to 25 years, including over 12 years with food processors, most recently with Saputo Foods Ltd.

Paul also works as a volunteer with several organizations, most notably Variety, the Children’s Charity and as a coach with North Coquitlam United Soccer Club.

 

Brian Rogers
Director

 

Brian spent most of his working career in the motion picture industry in operations, with responsibilities in labour negotiations, industrial relations, theatre management and most recently site selection and lease negotiations.

Formal education includes courses at UBC, BCIT, BCAMI Commercial Arbitration and UBC Real Estate Division - Property Management.

Brian currently holds the position of Human Resources and Office Manager for an organic sprouted grain bakery in Abbotsford BC, with responsibilities for Human Resources, employee Health & Safety and WorkSafeBC compliance, Consumer Relations and Corporate Privacy Compliance.

Brian sits as a Life member on the Board of Directors of the Motion Picture Theatre Association of BC, on the Board of Directors of the Motion Picture Pioneers of Canada (BC Branch) as well as the BCFPA Healthand Safety Council.

Previous volunteer service includes Scouts Canada (Langley) and Board Member of an independent Montessori School.

Terry Gates
Director

Terry Gates is the Director of Health and Safety for Saputo Dairy Canada, a company that employs 5000 people in locations that vary in size from 17 to 500 workers.  

Terry has 30 years of manufacturing, health and safety managerial leadership within the chemical, food, plastics, and specialty adhesives/ resins industries. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Management as well as a Masters of Business Administration degree.

He currently involved in providing strategic direction on safety at Saputo’s facilities in BC.

 

Mark Reilly
Director

 

Mark has over 25 years experience in the food and beverage processing industry. Mark has previously worked for Nalley’s, Molson Brewery, Kraft General Foods, Nestles, and Nabob Foods. In his current role, Mark provides health and safety management for over 450 staff at Freybe Gourmet Foods. Mark is a graduate of the BCIT Occupational Health and Safety Program as well as the Business Management program at Kwantlen Poly Technical University. Mark is currently studying American Sign Language through Douglas College. Mark also holds a Yellow Belt in Lean Six Sigma (BLSS).

 

Sandra A Whitfield
Director

 

Sandy has over 30 years experience in food and beverage manufacturing; she has spent the last 14 years in logistics, warehousing and customer service.

It was due to a workplace injury in the early 90's that Sandy began her interest and continued involvement in  Health and Safety. She has been a member of workplace health and safety committees for over 15 years. Sandy trained as an Ives certified forklift Instructor and has written and updated numerous SOP's for warehouse and forklift operators. She continues to share best practices.

Sandy has been a member of the BCFPA HR Committee since 2005 and enjoyed working and sharing the successes of the group.

Sandra Oldfield
Director

Sandra Oldfield is CEO and Winemaker at Tinhorn Creek Winery in Oliver. She is also involved in all aspects of marketing for the winery.

Sandra has a master’s degree in enology and a bachelor’s degree in international marketing. She has implemented a rigorous Health and Safety program at the Winery which has resulted in Tinhorn Creek recently achieving OSSE certification, the first Small Employer (less than 20 employees) to be recognized for reaching a standard of excellence in occupational health and safety.

Darby Ponich B.Sc (Kin), CRSP
Director

Darby has worked as a kinesiologist in various occupational return-to-work facilities, an ergonomist at a nuclear power facility, a health and safety specialist at a fully automated warehouse and a health and safety advisor for a multi-provincial warehousing and distribution company.
